Carmichael HART just finished their fifth year of backpack drives. They collected approximately 300 backpacks and unlimited school supplies.
Their strong school program committee coordinated the endeavor. Local churches, businesses and social clubs generously participated in the success of acquiring so many backpacks.
Two years ago Carmichael HART enthusiastically accepted HART of Orangevale and Fair Oaks in partnering with them in the backpack drive. Together these two HARTS collected 1,016 backpacks which were filled with much needed school supplies. Transitional students were blessed to receive brand new backpacks for the beginning of the school year. Both children and youth were very excited to have their very own backpack.
Backpacks were donated to the McKinney Vento program in the San Juan Unified School District. McKinney Vento is a federal program that provides for the needs of homeless or “at risk” students. Carmichael HART has partnered with McKinney Vento for six years, including student mentoring, supporting the Student Connect program as well as the backpack drive.
We encourage all the HARTS to join in this endeavor to uplift students in their school districts. McKinney Vento has the names and contact information for all the liaisons in each of the school districts in Sacramento county. Together we can make a difference for students experiencing homelessness in our communities. HART will continue to be known as the teams that improve the lives of the homeless and as forerunners in tackling an exponentially growing problem in our society.
